Spring 2025 Edition

By Elaina Barnes

For nearly twenty years, the arrival of spring at Klamath Union High School has brought with it a cherished tradition: the annual Mr. Pelican pageant. Hosted by KU’s Associated Student Body and held at the Ross Ragland Theater, the event invites senior boys to step into the spotlight—not just for entertainment, but for charity, school spirit, and community connection.

What began as a playful parody of Miss Klamath Falls has grown into a heartfelt celebration of KU’s senior class, with proceeds supporting local causes. Each year, contestants take part in five events that showcase humor, talent, and personality: Little Pels, Swimsuit, On Stage Questions, Talent, and Letters to Mom.

The show opens with Little Pels, where contestants interact with younger boys from the community—future Pelicans—through fun, quirky questions. The Swimsuit event brings flair and creativity as each contestant takes the stage in themed beachwear and a short performance. On Stage Questions range from thoughtful to silly, giving the audience a glimpse into the personalities behind the tuxedos. The Talent portion allows contestants to share something meaningful or entertaining, and finally, Letters to Mom brings heartfelt emotion, as each participant reads a letter to their mother onstage, often leading to teary eyes throughout the theater.

Each young man brings his own energy and story, adding personal touches that leave a lasting impression. The 2025 contestants were no exception, earning laughs, cheers, and admiration from the crowd. From musical performances to comedic bits, each act reflected the diverse strengths of KU’s seniors, and their willingness to be vulnerable and bold.

Winners are chosen by a panel of community members nominated by ASB. Contestants are judged not only on their performances but also on character and overall presentation. As anticipation built backstage, awards were announced: Logan Norton earned Mr. Congeniality, Jose Garcia was named Second Runner-Up, Ulises Ortega won both Best Talent and First Runner-Up, and Bryce Petersen took home Best Swimsuit and the prestigious title of Mr. Pelican 2025.

Mr. Pelican continues to be more than just a show. It’s a celebration of youth stepping confidently into adulthood, of memories shared and made, and of a community that comes together to support, laugh, and cheer. In just one night—five events, six awards, and eight brave contestants—Klamath Union once again honored its past, present, and future.
